This is a super term that was introduced to my daughter at her school. She attends a beautiful special needs school as socially she needed to step out of mainstream and spend time with her peers. There are a wide variety of needs and for my daughter it is a combination of Downs Syndrome and Autism. Regardless, of any diagnosis or whatever school your child attends, being able to communicate what you need is essential.
When I hear 'Mum, I'm feeling fizzy' it's promptly followed by 'Can you create a calm space for me'. This pop up creation rather than a permanent set-up means it can be adapted wherever we happen to be at the time.
Just to clarify, feeling fizzy can mean all sorts of things from anger to overwhelm, sadness to over-excited.
What's in the calm space? Well I notice how she's feeling, take a look around and layout a blanket, scarf, mat, towel, cushion and place 3-4 items around it such as
1) A book
2) A musical instrument
3) A ball
4) A fidget toy
5) Cards
6) Leaves
7) An essential oil
8) Pen & paper
9) Playdough
10) Bubbles
This list is endless and can recover from any feelings that feel unsettling, and a perfect tonic in the change your state collection.
